The Indian State of Madhya Pradesh or MP is among the largest states in India. It is situated in Central India with Satpura Ranges in South and Vindhayan ranges in North West. The Hill ranges are referred to as "Central Indian Highlands" by Capt. J, Forsyth in his book. The book gives excellent narrative about the Central Indian Wildlife, mammals and the geography of this region as it was during the British Period in 19th century.

Madhya Pradesh is renowned for its wildlife both the flora and fauna. The state still retains substantial forest cover and its amazing flora and fauna elements. Madhya Pradesh is also known as the Tiger State of India due to presence of large number of tigers in Indian tiger reserves, sanctuaries and National Parks

The state is not only rich in wildlife it has a rich historical past with numerous dynasties ruling kingdoms. These royal domains have left invaluable monuments of the past. The culture is rich in art and dance which are often show cased during the colorful festivals of Madhya Pradesh.   

The note able and most visited destinations are the11th Century AD Khajuraho temples, Gwalior Fort, Kawardha  Palace, Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh and Pench Tiger Reserve. Other tourists places which are very popular are Orchha and Sanchi. The state's only hill resort  is a pristine paradise  called  Pachmarhi. Marble Rocks and Bedhaghat at Jabalpur are a must visit places especially for  boating through marble rocks on a gorge at river Narbada. 

Bhopal with a rich historical past  is the  capital  of Madhya Pradesh  while Indore is  the  industrial  capital. The erstwhile state of Scindhia's...Gwalior has lots of offer from Chattrias, Tomb, Palace and the Fort.

The tourism infrastructure is well developed in MP and destinations are well connected with air, rail and bus services.   There are number of online travel agencies that offer package tours to places of interests and major cities of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Understanding India

Recently while on a visit to Kanha as a nature guide my from UK asked me if I could understand India as they could not. Some of the visitors had been to other parts of India before.

"I do not," I replied bluntly. 'This so," I continued. " As India is diverse and a pluralistic society. A society mired in plethora of customs, rites and beliefs that amazes a tourist from a homogeneous land to no end.

Thats what makes traveling in India so exciting be it a historical or cultural tour or a bengal tiger safari for watching Indian wildlife or a temple visit to famous Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh in India. As does the language Indian landscape changes every 100 miles in any direction. The hues and colors and the low and high of the land became apparently different from what the traveler had experienced earlier. From dense forest laden with wild trees and teeming with wildlife to swampy grasslands and vast expanses of meadows notched here and there with sparsely populated villages to large densely populated towns. The rivers meander through forested hilly slopes down the valley inbetwixt and snake through plains and grasslands. On banks they support humanity and wildernes as well.      

The colors change as one traveses through the India land the trees, flowers in bloom, to the flowing garbs of the people and the hue of the looming sky at sunset and sunrise.

Real traveling in India is for those who are willing to let go of comfort at times. Since, real India lives in rural surrounding where modern day facilities may not be available. India changes every few miles and changes miraculously. Its diversity unfolds as you span distances on dusty bare and naked roads.

The country side is inviting and alluring. The quaint thatched huts in rustic surroundings add to the green country side and form an exotic scenario which is a feast to the eye.

India is a country of a billion people but the majority live in lifeless, never changing villages that are as they existed centuries ago. The only change that has come about is single bulb electricity and perhaps a tube well for affluent farmers.

The dust, the heat and the ubiquitous cattle and bullock cart are there to stay a landscape raped perhaps by a modern day tractor owned by local landlord. Else, there is a standstill...complete standstill. You cannot expect more but the gain is a feast to eyes...the smell of food cooked in earthern pots on log wood interspersed with smell of fresh cow dung and dried haystacks.

To a foriegn traveller the site is mystic and often bizzare. But the stagnation of centuries is a reality and this is where the majority of India's teeming billion survive. The customs, rites and rituals strange and have an esoteric charm that hangs around the memory lanes for lifetime or in a visitors photograph.

Landscape changes from flat alluvial plains to rugged mountains and dense forested slopes where the amazing Indian wildlife thrives in folds of biodiversity. The tiger makes its last stand here and so do a number of other life forms that have been victimized by men's greed and urge for reckless development. Environment is green undisturbed and carries a pristine halo that tells the story of India that which originates in eons of life on earth.  

Modern India is devoid of rustic charm and is impregnated with smog of industrialization, mileu of uncontroled, ungovernable masses and the filth of slums. On your vacation visit rural India and feel the delight of natural existance of humans.           

India is a vast country with a diversity that is mind boggling to those who travel in India. It is an admix of colors and plain simplicity that astounds the modern world. From jet planes to bullock cart India is surmised in one paradox.

A pot pourri of culture and amazing mix of religions that strive hard to survive the onslaught of modern Nationalism and liberal secular value and find succor in orthodox revivalism and fanatical zeal.

It is a country of modern industry and age of agricultural pratice. No where, is such incoherence seen as in this amazing country, but India survives and progresses by leaps and bound.

India was in the hit list of centuries old invaders and explorers. No wonder that in the current scenario India travel is in vogue. If one can survive the heat and the dust or afford the expensive fivestar baggage then one can travel to India for exploring the many wonders it harbors not only the Taj Mahal.           

The Orient has always been a subject of mystical attraction be it the thought, culture, religious values, and intrinsic ethnicity that is totally bizzare to the West (sometimes).

From wild tiger safari to religious pilgrimage in holds a tourists charm like no other country. Travelers to India experience not only its culture but delight in its history so effectively protrayed by the age old monuments that dot the urban and remote landscape along with towering modern structures and slums.
